こちらもシカゴ・ブルーズの重鎮ジェイムズ・コットン。1968年のヴァンガード録音で、ホーンやオルガンを含むバンドを率いて名人芸のブルーズハープ＆ヴォーカルを聴かせてくれる。音だけ聴いてトロンボーンとサックスのアンサンブルかと思ったら、マイク・フェンダーという人がバス・トランペットを吹いているのだった。低音ホーンだけというのが渋くてかっこいい。 |

ミシシッピの泥の中から生まれたようなR&B系（ソウル系）のマジック・サム。つまり長靴に泥をつけて歩いている都会人なのである。わからんか。サムはサミュエル・マゲットというのだそうだ。1937年のヴァレンタインデーの生まれ。1950年に一家でシカゴに移り、そのころからギターを弾くようになったという。55年にはクラブで演奏できるほどになっていたそうだ。じかに聴いたであろうマディ・ウォーターズの影響が感じられるヴォーカルとギター。そこに当時隆盛を誇っていたR&Bのテイストが加わっているのがマジック・サムなのだ。 |
